Selecting a seal material
The elastomer has to survive three things: the product, the cleaning chemicals and the temperature. EPDM is common with hot water and steam, silicone is flexible and clean but less resistant to oils, and fluoropolymers such as PTFE and FKM cope with aggressive chemicals and fats. Getting the material wrong shows up as swelling, hardening or cracking, and the first symptom is often a leak or a black particle in the product.
For food, beverage and pharmaceutical use, compliance is documented. CGS manufactures and stocks a wide variety of gaskets, o-rings and seals made to meet and exceed FDA and USP Class VI requirements, using hygienic elastomers and fluoropolymers designed to be compliant with FDA CFR 21 CFR 177.2600 and 177.1550.
